Keith first came to Headway Kent after several years of adjusting to life following a brain injury. Like many of those we support, he was navigating a new reality—one filled with challenges, change, and a need to rediscover confidence and connection.
“I was finding things tough, particularly around frustration and adapting to the limitations I now had,” he recalls. “But coming to Headway was the first time I’d been in a space where everyone just got it. Even though our experiences were different, that shared understanding made all the difference.”
Through group activities, informal discussions, and the support of others facing similar challenges, Keith began to notice a shift. “I became more open, less frustrated, and slowly started reconnecting—with others and with myself. The sessions genuinely helped my wellbeing, and even improved things at home.”
Now, 18 months on, Keith is a much-valued volunteer at Headway Kent. His thoughtful, relaxed approach has been a hit with staff and clients alike—and recent session feedback reflects that:
Session delivery: Well delivered by Keith
Session engagement: Great engagement
Group dynamics: Lots of humour and great camaraderie amongst Keith, staff and clients alike
Keith’s presence brings warmth, humour, and a real sense of shared purpose to our sessions. “It’s a privilege to be able to give something back to the place that helped me so much. I hope others get as much from me as I continue to get from them.”
We’re incredibly grateful for everything Keith brings to our community—proof that peer support, lived experience, and a good sense of humour can be powerful tools in rebuilding life after brain injury. CEO Jenny Walsh said, "Keith is a fantastic volunteer and the great feedback we receive about him shows just how wonderful he is. We are lucky to have him as such a dedicated volunteer."
